Urchins Hedgehog Care, York
Back in 2015 I opened up all the blocked up gaps in my fence – these were blocked due to having a dog who liked to roam. Within days, I saw the return of hedgehogs in my garden. So simple! Early in the Autumn of 2015 I was noticing small hoglets (known as Autumn Juveniles). They were possibly too little to survive the winter without help. I contacted a local rescue and decided to start over-wintering to help out. Within days we had the children’s wendy house converted for the arrival of 3 hedgehogs during the winter of 2015/16. The story continues from there – I was hooked and the following summer started to rescue on my own. I work closely with a local vet and have contact with a number of other rescues in Yorkshire. I now have hutches for the summer months too but I do have to stay within my limits on numbers as work and family do have to take priority. During 2017 I took in about 30 hedgehogs.
